The thunderstorm in the middle of the night shook me out of my sleep. The angry baritone thunder was rumbling our house. The heavy rain and gusty winds’ howling noises were only getting louder. Yet, even in the darkness of the storm, beams of lightning flashed with such brilliance and awe.
I was anticipating my kids to cry out in fear or my husband to awake. No one made a peep. Not even our dog howled in distress. So I eventually dozed back to sleep. Early the next morning, I could not help but think about the lightning in the storm. It reminded me of this scripture from Luke 17:24:
“For as the lightning flashes and lights up the sky from one end to the other, so it will be on the day when the Son of Man comes.”

From SON Shine to Sunshine
I’m so thankful that God turned my darkness to light. Until that day when our Savior comes, we are to shine our light bright in a world of darkness. Matthew 5:14-16 states, “You are the light of the world….let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.”
Since the “SON shines” his life within us, let us be sunshine for others. Here are some reflection questions:
- Examine your own heart for any darkness, hurt, or shame. Are you allowing God to shine through you to expose and overcome darkness in your own life?
- In what ways are you tempted to keep your light hidden?
- What simple act of love can you do today to bring sunshine to someone? Encourage? Write a letter? Bring a meal? Give a hug?
Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for turning our darkness to light by your precious Son, Jesus Christ. Holy Spirit, show us any areas in our life that needs to be exposed to the Light of Jesus. Help us to not hide our light, but to shine brightly in a world so they can be pointed to You. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
